Taking the Pain Out of Patient Handling

This purpose of this independent study is to provide registered nurses with an overview of safe patient handling, including organizational and professional cultural influences, assessment of patient handling needs, use of assistive equipment and devices, and essential elements of a safe patient-handling program.

Objectives:

  1. State the influence of nursing and organizational culture on patient-handling practices.
  2. Describe how to assess a patient’s handling needs.
  3. Discuss the various types of assistive equipment that can be used to reduce worker injury and protect patients during handling.
  4. Identify the essential elements of a safe patient-handling program.
