Abstract & Objectives

 

At the end of this presentation, the participant will be able to:

    1. Discuss potential funding sources for nurse workforce and workplace projects
    2. Identify project planning skills
    3. Discuss proposal components that assure a successful review
    4. Identify proposal writing specific that can assure successful review

Presenters

Dr. Dennis Sherrod serves as the inaugural Forsyth Medical Center Endowed Chair of Recruitment & Retention and Professor in the Division of Nursing at Winston-Salem State University, Winston-Salem, NC. Dr. Sherrod is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow, serves as President of the North Carolina Nurses Association and is President-Elect of the Center for American Nurses. Dennis has more than twenty-five years of nursing experience and over a decade of recruitment and retention expertise.

Dennis has served as chair of Nursing Management's National Recruitment & Retention Conference for the past four years and within the last year coauthored his second book titled “A Practical Guide to Recruitment and Retention.”

Dr. Sherrod has written numerous funded grant applications and has developed grant programs, including application and review processes, at both the state and national levels. In North Carolina, he developed the NC Recruitment & Retention Grant Program and on the national level he chaired the State Demonstration Task Force with the Center for American Nurses where he directed development of a national grant program. Dennis speaks nationally and internationally and brings a common sense approach to nurse workforce and workplace issues.

Dr. Bowers-Lanier is currently employed as a Legislative Consultant at Macaulay & Burtch, PC, in Richmond, VA. In that position, she lobbies for nurses, nurse midwives, dietitians, counselors, school psychologists, community services boards, hospices, and massage therapists.

From 1995 – 2003, Becky served as Deputy Director of Colleagues in Caring: Regional Collaboratives for Nursing Work Force Development, a national program funded by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Becky has experience as a nursing service supervisor, staff nurse, faculty member, and nursing education program administrator. She was department head of nursing at Norfolk State University from 1987 until 1995.

Becky is the co-editor of Nursing Workforce Development: Strategic State Initiatives, recently published by Springer and a 2006 American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year award. She has contributed chapters for Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care as well as written articles for American Journal of Nursing, Journal of Nursing Administration, and the Journal of Nursing Education. Neither presenter has disclosed any relevant financial relationship.

The American Nurses Association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
