Duffy DNSc., RN, CCRN andDenise M Korniewicz DNSc., RN, FAAN Nurse-sensitive outcomes indicators have been established by the American Nurses Association to help demonstrate nursing's unique contributions to healthcare. A beginning knowledge base in research methods, while not the typical domain of nurses, is necessary to implement this program. Levels of measurement, validity, and reliability are reviewed. Challenges inherent in data collection are described and strategies to overcome them are suggested. The nurses' role in maintaining data integrity as well as the focus of evidence based nursing practice are highlighted.
