Overview

Monograph 1: Menopausal Health: An Overview and Short-term Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy, is the first in a series of monographs that are designed to prepare nurses to help patients achieve optimal health during menopause. Today's nurses need advanced knowledge about the therapeutic options that may help prevent and/or treat the clinical results of estrogen loss. To maintain optimal health, menopausal women must make informed choices. But all too often, patients are misinformed about menopause, therapeutic options, and how to protect their health. This monograph has several purposes that include:

  • providing an overview of menopausal health
  • explaining the normal menstrual cycle
  • discussing the implications of the estrogen loss that occurs with menopause
  • outlining the increase in disease risk for postmenopausal women
  • explaining short-term menopausal symptoms (vasomotor and genitourinary)
  • describing the therapeutic options and regimens available

Objectives

Menopausal Health: An Overview and Short-term Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy is a CE monograph designed to provide nurses with up-to-date information. After studying this monograph, nurses should be able to perform the following tasks:

  • define the health issues that commonly affect the perimenopausal woman
  • describe the recently discovered complexities of estrogen and estrogen receptors
  • describe the physiology of the normal menstrual cycle and how it is changed by menopause
  • list the short-term symptoms associated with menopause
  • develop a plan for appropriate counseling for the perimenopausal woman
  • identify the therapeutic options and treatment regimens available for menopausal women
