Its main advantage is that there is no estrogen-free interval period during which vasomotor symptoms may recur. Progestin is usually prescribed to start on the first day of the month or the 15th day. Regardless of when progestin is started, bleeding should occur shortly after the progestin is discontinued. The major drawback of this regimen is monthly bleeding.
