Many government agencies and nonprofit or educational organizations are working to promote patient safety by improving healthcare quality.

    Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)'s mission is to improve the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care for all Americans. An agency within the Department of Health and Human Services, AHRQ supports research that improves the quality of health care services.
  • AQA

    AQA

    AQA was formerly the Ambulatory Care Quality Alliance. AQA is a large voluntary collaborative of physicians, consumers, purchasers, health insurance plans and others (including ANA) that work to improve health care quality and patient safety by having stakeholders agree on strategies for measuring performance at the physician or group level, collecting data, and reporting information to consumers and physicians to inform choices and improve outcomes.

    CMS is a branch of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. CMS is the federal agency that administers the Medicare program and monitors the Medicaid programs offered by each state.
  • Hospital Compare

    Hospital Compare

    Hospital Compare, a project of the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA), is a web tool developed to publicly report credible and user-friendly information about the quality of care delivered in the nation's hospitals. Hospital Compare enables health care providers and patients compare the quality of care provided in the hospitals that agree to submit data. This quality information helps patients make good decisions about care and encourages hospitals to improve the quality care they provide.

    HQA is a public-private collaboration committed to making meaningful, relevant, and easily understood information about hospital performance accessible to the public and to informing and encouraging efforts to improve quality. ANA is an HQA Principal. We participate in HQA subgroups focused on improving Hospital Compare by including nurse-sensitive measures; revising the Hospital Compare display, and expanding membership.

    National Coordinating Council for Medication Error Reporting and Prevention

    NCC MERP is an independent body comprised of 27 national organizations, including ANA, cooperating to address the interdisciplinary causes of errors and to promote the safe use of medications.
  • National Priorities Partnership

    National Priorities Partnership (NNP)

    NPP offers consultative support to the Department of Health and Human Services on setting national priorities and goals for the HHS National Quality Strategy. The 48 member organizations, which include ANA, identify strategies for achieving better care, affordable care, and healthy people and communities; and facilitate coordinated, multi-stakeholder action.

    NQF is a nonprofit organization with a three-part mission to improve the quality of American healthcare: building consensus on national priorities and goals for performance; endorsing national consensus standards for measuring and reporting on performance; and promoting the attainment of national goals through education programs.

    Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement

    The American Medical Association (AMA)-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement® (PCPI) is committed to enhancing quality of care and patient safety by taking the lead in the development, testing, and maintenance of evidence-based clinical performance measures and measurement resources for physicians. The American Nurses Association is a healthcare professional organization member of PCPI.
  • Quality Alliance Steering Committee

    Quality Alliance Steering Committee

    The Quality Alliance Steering Committee (QASC) is funded through a $15.8 million dollar grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to: (1) aggregate private-sector and Medicare claims data and provide regional collaboratives with physician/medical group performance information; (2) ensure that aggregated data can identify racial and ethnic disparities of care; and (3) develop episodes of care and evaluate provider cost and efficiency across an episode.

    Stand for Quality (SFQ), a coalition led by the National Quality Forum, represents a deep and wide cross-section of health care organizations including the American Nurses Association. SFQ holds that a key step toward achieving national health system reform is the establishment of methods to evaluate how care is delivered currently (i.e., measuring performance) and then using that information to further improve care.
  • The Joint Commission

    The Joint Commission

    The Joint Commission accredits thousands of healthcare organizations and programs nationwide. The Joint Commission focuses on making sure facilities provide quality care and uphold high standards of patient safety. The accreditation is a well known symbol of quality, awarded by a Board of Commissioners, which includes 29 members with diverse experience in medicine, business, and policy.
