Patient Safety & Nursing Quality

For over 100 years, ANA has been working to improve patient safety by promoting nursing quality. The National Center for Nursing Quality (NCNQ®) has been created by ANA to address patient safety and quality in nursing care and nurses' work lives. The center advocates for nursing quality through quality measurement, novel research, and collaborative learning. Issues such as the nursing workforce and impact on patient outcomes are tackled through innovative initiatives, which include the National Database for Nursing Quality Indicators® (NDNQI®) and Safe Staffing Saves Lives, among others.

  ANA's Official Position on This Issue: The ANA supports the inclusion of policies and processes that address tubing and catheter connections as part of the health care delivery system and the prevention of tubing and catheter misconnections as a National Patient Safety Goal (The Joint Commission, 2006a). The ANA also advocates collaborative investigation with nurses, manufacturers and product engineers to eliminate tubing and catheter misconnections by creating a universal design specific to the function of the tube.
• Agency for Health Care Policy and Research: Proposed Research Agenda
  AHCPR, NINR, and the Division of Nursing of HRSA invite comments and suggestions of priority research topics related to the impact of nurse staffing on the quality of care in hospitals.
• ANA's Response to the AHCPR's Proposed Nursing Research Agenda
  We are pleased that AHCPR is working with both NINR and the Division of Nursing. Overall, the list of proposed priority research topics appears to be concise, yet comprehensive, well formulated and clearly linked to the Institute of Medicine's report, Nursing Staff in Hospitals and Nursing Homes -- Is it Adequate?
