In order to educate members of the Senate about challenges facing nursing, Senators Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Mike Johanns (R-NE), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) established the Senate Nursing Caucus on March 25, 2010.

Nurse Reinvestment Act Background
On August 1, 2002 President George W. Bush signed the Nurse Reinvestment Act into law. The American Nurses Association (ANA) fought for passage of the act, which addresses the nursing shortage by authorizing important recruitment and retention initiatives.
