Letter to the Editor by Melanie Pelletier on Emerging Infections Diseases at the Beginning of the 21st Century

I am writing in response to Dr. Lashley’s article, “Emerging Infections Diseases at the Beginning of the 21st Century.” I have found this article to be very informative and eye-opening. I am currently completing a RN-BSN program and have been a home-care nurse for twelve years. Dr. Lashley brought to my attention the fact that many of the seven emerging, infectious diseases have few early signs or symptoms or cures. This suggests to me that education regarding the prevention of these diseases is our key to controlling these infections. With economic and political challenges, such as war, homelessness, poverty, and the recent surge in food contamination, on our doorsteps, it is essential that we as nurses continue to obtain the education needed to remain knowledgeable about potential infections diseases and to remain updated on the resurgence of known diseases.
