Nursing at its Best: Competent and Caring, by Marilyn K. Rhodes, EdD, MSN, RN, CNM; Arlene H. Morris, EdD, MSN, RN, CNE; and Ramona Browder Lazenby, EdD, RN, FNP-BC, CNE, describes a survey that nursing students completed regarding their motivations to go into nursing and perceptions of competence and caring. They report that these beginning students already valued both competence and caring in nursing practice. The authors conclude with recommendations for student recruitment, curricular emphasis, and future research.
