ANA Call To Action: Protesting Negative Portrayal of Nursing In Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie”

SILVER SPRING, MD - Television shows, such as Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie” portray nurses in what some reviews describe as a more “realistic” light. ANA, however, disagrees with that assessment and has serious reservations about what it feels are controversial—and very unlikely—situations highlighted in the shows.

“ANA is disappointed in the distasteful portrayal of nurses and nursing in ‘Nurse Jackie’.  ANA's concern is that negative images such as those in ‘Nurse Jackie’ erode the highly valued trust of patients who rely on the expertise of nurses in health care situations. These harmful images also play a role in shaping the values, impressions and ultimately the career choices of young people, and may very well contribute to the nursing shortage that is reaching crisis proportions in our nation," said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR.
