ANA-PAC Endorses Debbie Wasserman Schultz in Florida House Race

Silver Spring, MD – The American Nurses Association (ANA) and its Political Action Committee (ANA-PAC) today announced the endorsement of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL-23) in her congressional race to continue representing the residents of Florida's 23rd district. Each election cycle, ANA-PAC endorses candidates who have demonstrated strong support for nursing and health care issues and will best serve the interests of nurses and their patients.

Rep. Wasserman Schultz has been serving the people of South Florida for more than two decades. She has been a champion for nurses and has made a commitment to lowering health care costs and protecting Medicare. Additionally, as a breast cancer survivor, she introduced legislation directing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to create a national education campaign about the threat of breast cancer to all young women and the heightened risks for certain ethnic, cultural, and racial groups. This bill was enacted into law as part of the Affordable Care Act. Currently, Rep. Wasserman Schultz serves as the chair of the Democratic National Committee.

"Rep. Wasserman Shultz has always addressed issues related to health care, including breast cancer screening and prevention, particularly in high-risk populations. She is also an advocate of children’s health and safety. This work aligns closely with the core mission of our association," said Willa Fuller, RN, executive director of the Florida Nurses Association. "We applaud her leadership and believe she is the type of leader who will help make certain that nurses’ voices are heard on Capitol Hill."

ANA-PAC works to ensure that nursing's perspective is considered in policy decisions made on Capitol Hill. Endorsement decisions are based on several criteria including, but not limited to, candidate interviews, communication with ANA's constituent and state nurses associations, campaign information, and the candidate's voting record on ANA's priority issues.
