The International Society of Nurses in Genetics (ISONG) and the American Nurses Association (ANA) Publish Newly Revised Genetics/Genomics Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice

Silver Spring, MD - Nursesbooks.org, the publishing program of ANA, in collaboration with ISONG has just released a newly revised Genetics Standard last published in 1998. ISONG is the official professional organization of nurses in genetics in the United States, and also represents nurses worldwide. ISONG defines and establishes the scope of professional nursing practice in genetics and acknowledges the role of ANA in defining the scope of practice for the nursing profession as a whole. This book broadly describes genetics and genomics nursing practice, then delineates the scope of genetics clinical nursing practice in the United States.

While Genetics/Genomics Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice is primarily for practicing nurses, it is also an essential resource for others in related healthcare work. For more information visit nursesbooks.org or call 1-800-637-0323.

In September 2005; the, ANA, National Human Genome Research Institute, the National Cancer Institute, and the Office of Rare Diseases of the National Institutes of Health partnered to host a consensus panel of key experts and representatives of organizations to delineate essential genetic and genomic competencies for all registered nurses. On October 23-24 of this year, this panel met again to establish consensus on a strategic plan that will ensure that the United States nursing workforce is prepared to integrate clinical advances in genetics and genomics into healthcare as indicated by their practice. The Genetic and Genomic Competencies document is currently available at www.nursingworld.org/ethics/genetics and www.genome.gov/17517037, or a hardcopy may be obtained by request from NHGRI, NIH Bldg. 31, Rm. 4B09, Bethesda, MD 20892-2152.

Review copies of Genetics/Genomics Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice are available upon request by contacting Francine Bennett. Please include name of publication, organization, reviewer name and address information including phone and email address.

The ANA is the only full-service professional organization representing the nation's 2.9 million registered nurses through its 54 constituent member nurses associations. The ANA advances the nursing profession by fostering high standards of nursing practice, promoting the rights of nurses in the workplace, projecting a positive and realistic view of nursing, and by lobbying the Congress and regulatory agencies on health care issues affecting nurses and the public.
