American Nurses Association Purchases OJIN: The Online Journal Of Issues In Nursing
Silver Spring, MD - The American Nurses Association (ANA) announced today its purchase of OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing from the Kent State University College of Nursing. OJIN is hosted and exclusively posted on ANA's Web site at www.nursingworld.org/ojin.
OJIN, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is published three times yearly. It presents timely information required by nurses and other health care professionals to provide current and informed patient care, to be socially responsive health care professionals, and to meet professional development needs.
"The American Nurses Association recognizes the superb quality of OJIN, and is committed to maintaining that same level of excellence," said ANA President Rebecca M. Patton, MSN, RN, CNOR. "Both ANA and the Kent State University College of Nursing acknowledge that the editorial independence of the Editor-in-Chief in executing the journal's mission is an essential condition for maintaining quality in a scholarly journal. Therefore, the editorial independence of the Editor-in-Chief will be protected and respected by ANA."
The American Nurses Association will continue to furnish digital publishing services, technical support, and Web hosting. It also maintains and delivers an electronic newsletter for OJIN readers to announce postings of new journal articles, columns, keynotes, and continuing education offerings.
"Having ANA as the OJIN publisher will provide the support it needs to continue examining current nursing issues from a variety of perspectives and to guide nurses' professional activities in whatever setting they might be practicing," said Harriet V. Coeling, PhD, RN, Professor Adult Nursing, Kent State University College of Nursing and Editor-in-Chief, OJIN. "Now that the ownership of OJIN has gone national, we'll be responding to an even greater variety of health care issues."
OJIN was first published in June 1996, making it the first electronic-only journal without charge in nursing, as well as one of the few online scholarly nursing journals. OJIN averages 100,000 user sessions and more than 150,000 page views per month.
"We are thrilled to have OJIN as an official part of the American Nurses Association's family of publications," said ANA Chief Executive Officer Linda J. Stierle, MSN, RN, CNAA, BC. "A scholarship fund will be established from the funds to purchase OJIN at the Kent State University College of Nursing that will be named the 'American Nurses Association OJIN Scholarship Fund.' In honor of the journal's 10th anniversary, ANA wants to recognize the joint work of the faculty at Kent State who developed and nurtured the scholarly journal, as well as ANA's commitment to the online journal since 1996."
OJIN's international readership includes nurses employed by thousands of health care organizations throughout the world, researchers, and educators and students in a variety of educational programs. It fills an important niche for nursing and other health care professionals. In the years since its inception, OJIN's articles have covered diverse topics including aging, complementary therapies, diversity, domestic violence, entry into practice, genetics, patient and nurse safety and infectious diseases.
Each issue begins with invited articles on selected topics written by experts in that specific area. An advantage of electronic journals over print journals is that articles can be added over time, instantly updating the site with relevant current information. All articles, invited and unsolicited, undergo a blind peer-review by a Review Board, who recommend acceptance, resubmission or rejection of the manuscript.
