Currently vice president of the American Nurses Association, Cindy R. Balkstra, MS, RN, CNS-BC, has more than 25 years of nursing and leadership experience. Balkstra began her career as a registered nurse on a post-operative care unit at the University of California, San Francisco. Since then, she has advanced through staff nurse positions to nurse educator, nursing supervisor and clinical nurse specialist. Today, Balkstra serves as a case manager for PruittHealth Hospice in Georgia, where she is responsible for evaluations and home care, including symptom management. She also acts as a clinical consultant for CareFusion, educating nursing staff on medical equipment in hospitals throughout the United States and Canada.
Active in professional organizations, Balkstra served as president of the Georgia Nurses Association (GNA) from 2007-2009. In addition to her active leadership in GNA and ANA, Balkstra is past president of the Respiratory Nursing Society and a member of Sigma Theta Tau.
Balkstra holds a BSN degree from Villa Maria College and an MSN degree from the University of California, San Francisco. Balkstra currently is a PhD/DNP student at Goldfarb School of Nursing, Barnes Jewish College in St. Louis. Balkstra is a board-certified clinical nurse specialist (CNS-BC) and a recognized expert in clinical nursing, pulmonary care, and end-of-life care.
