ANA and House Leaders Implore President to Support Children’s Health

Yesterday, ANA PAC Board Treasurer Mary Behrens, RN, MSN, FNP-C joined House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC), House Democratic Caucus Chair Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) and others in a press conference calling upon President Bush to support legislation providing health insurance for America’s children. The press conference, held in the U.S. Capitol, was designed to urge President Bush not to veto the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 (H.R. 976). This bipartisan legislation would renew and strengthen the widely successful State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), extending health care coverage to 4 million previously uninsured kids under the age of 19.

Speaking to the need to cover uninsured children, Behrens stated, "Every day, I see uninsured patients who rely on the E.R. for primary care. This leads not only to E.R. overcrowding but also to un-coordinated care and poor outcomes for the uninsured."

Noting that President Bush had vowed to veto the SCHIP Reauthorization bill, House Majority Leader Hoyer charged that Bush has abandoned his own 2004 Republican National Convention promise "'to lead an aggressive effort to enroll millions of poor children who are eligible but not signed up for government insurance programs.'"
