Second Annual Lecture Series Builds on the Legacy of Nurse Activist Mary Eliza Mahoney

SILVER SPRING, MD – On Tuesday, May 7, the American Nurses Association (ANA) will host its second annual Mary Eliza Mahoney Lecture Series installment entitled “Activism and Advocacy: Building on the Legacy of Mary Eliza Mahoney.” As part of ANA’s Journey of Racial Reconciliation and sponsored by Capella University, this virtual lecture will present a diverse panel of distinguished nurse activists as they discuss the crucial role of advocacy in tackling health inequities.
Panelists for the 2024 lecture include:
- Sheldon Fields, PhD, RN, CRNP, FNP-BC, AACRN, FAANP, FNAP, FAAN – National Black Nurses Association President and Penn State University Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion (Panel Moderator)
- Adrian Espinosa, MPH, MS, RN, PHN, FNP-BC – Society of Latinx Nurses Founder (Panel Speaker)
- Aron King, MS, RN – Capitol City Black Nurses Association member (Panel Speaker)
- Matilde Upano, MSN-FNP, RN – Philippine Nurses Association of Indiana, Inc. President (Panel Speaker)
- Misty Wilkie, PhD, RN, FAAN – University of Minnesota School of Nursing’s Director of the Center for Indigenous People, Health, & Nursing and member of the National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association (Panel Speaker)
Participants will gain valuable insights into the strategies and challenges of modern nursing advocacy, learn from the experiences of leading voices in the profession, and discover how to apply these lessons to effect change in their communities. This is the second installment in the series’ three-year commitment to host an annual event held on or near Ms. Mahoney’s birth date (May 7) and examine Mahoney’s impact on contemporary nursing practice.
